Detecting Mars Surface Change Using Landmark Comparison

چکیده

Current pixel-based methods of automatic image change detection are too computationally expensive and prone to spurious detection to discover meaningful changes in Mars surface features in NASA’s large, continuously expanding database of satellite imagery. Automatically finding these changes is important to planetary geologists as the changes often represent the appearance of new dust devil tracks, dark slope streaks, and meteor impacts. We developed a more efficient method of change detection that compares information about landforms appearing in subsequent images of the same region. By avoiding the direct comparison of pixels, this method reduces computational complexity and is more robust against variations in lighting and camera orientation. We investigated improvements to our methods of selecting regions that stand out from their surroundings and developed a graph representation of these landforms. We then applied graph matching algorithms to detect emerging and disappearing landforms. Finally, we experimented with a RANSAC algorithm to refine this matching under the assumption that the coordinate systems of the compared images are related by an affine transform.

Precision Instrument Targeting via Image Registration for the Mars 2020 Rover

A key component of Mars exploration is the operation of robotic instruments on the surface, such as those on board the Mars Exploration Rovers, the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), and the planned Mars 2020 Rover. As the instruments carried by these rovers have become more advanced, the area targeted by some instruments becomes smaller, revealing more fine-grained details about the geology and ch...

A Comparison of Preliminary Design Concepts for Liquid, Solid and Hybrid Propelled Mars Ascent Vehicles Using In-Situ Propellants Rowan University

With a mission to Mars no longer merely an idea of science fiction, it is not too early to determine the technology requirements that will ultimately make it possible for humans to establish a long term outpost on Mars. One key aspect is the development of a reliable, reusable launch vehicle to shuttle astronauts between the Mars surface and low Martian orbit. This preliminary design study serv...

Antarctic dry valleys: Microclimate zonation, variable geomorphic processes, and implications for assessing climate change on Mars

The Antarctic Dry Valleys (ADV) are generally classified as a hyper-arid, cold-polar desert. The region has long been considered an important terrestrial analog for Mars because of its generally cold and dry climate and because it contains a suite of landforms at macro-, meso-, and microscales that closely resemble those occurring on the martian surface. The extreme hyperaridity of both Mars an...

The Impacts of Population Change and Economic Growth on Carbon Emissions in Nigeria

T he main aim of this study is to investigate the impacts of population total, gross domestic product per capita, urbanization rate and energy use on carbon emissions in Nigeria for a period of 1981-2015 using autoregressive distributed lag approach to co-integration (ARDL). The empirical results revealed evidence of a long run relationship among the variables. The generalized ridge ...

Analysis of the chromatin domain organisation around the plastocyanin gene reveals an MAR-specific sequence element in Arabidopsis thaliana.

The Arabidopsis thaliana genome is currently being sequenced, eventually leading towards the unravelling of all potential genes. We wanted to gain more insight into the way this genome might be organized at the ultrastructural level. To this extent we identified matrix attachment regions demarking potential chromatin domains, in a 16 kb region around the plastocyanin gene. The region was cloned...
